On Saturday June 26 2004, I took the opportunity to see the Golden Earring coverband Bloody Buccaneers in my own region while at first I thought I couldn't make it. I went to The Hague to see them again; they are a musical tribute to the Golden Earring. The local radiostation Stadsradio 92 and Haags Poppodium booked the band twice on the same day. At first they played at the same stage the Earring performed in the early eighties (and also recorded the Radar love clip!) as closing act with great succes (Opemlucht theater Zuiderpark). You can see an impression of Haags Poppodium Live on VPRO 3 voor 12. Then they moved to the nearby Bowlingcentre Zuiderpark and performed their 40th gig in 2,5 years (!) for over 1,5 hours. And wow, they played really great. Their show was a little bit shorter than they are used to as time was limited a due to our soccer team which needed more minutes and finally penalties to get to the semi-finals on the Euro 2004 soccer championship... Just after the last penalty the band played their first song When the lady smiles and got everybody's attention. While on the big wall-screen views were to be seen of the victory of the football team the band was out to claim their own victory. Leadsinger Pascal is a very energetic person and moves on and off the stage and succeeded in getting the attention of female fans. During Mad love is coming a lovely lady joined him on stage while being sung to. ('So you want different positions in your lovelife') But also while I was shooting pictures he made contact with me and give me the opportunity to make some great photographs which are now added to this webpage to promote the band's liveshow some more... Bassplayer Peter is (like all bassplayers I guess) very quiet and on the side of the stage but his bass does the talking for him. It provides the basis for the Buccaneers sound together with Jan on drums. Guitarist Henk claims every now and then his share with nice solo's in She flies on strange wings, Twilight zone and Mad love is coming for example. Another fine thing is that the Buccaneers also play some songs Golden Earring doesn't play anymore if they play a 2 hour set. That gives us fans the opportunity to hear those songs live again or maybe even for the first time...
The band gave it's first concert on December 15th. 2001 and today playing it's 40th show! As those musicians are playing Limburg and surroundings for almost three years they now have found their way to other parts of Holland. So you better watch out as those Bloody buccaneers are set for the conquering of the wild wild west of the Netherlands. If you want to hear great Golden Earring songs played live but don't have the real band in the neighbourhood, just book them and succes assured!
